Day 29: 400 Years of Silence

Between Testaments

Ornament: Locked Scroll

The time between the Old Testament and the New Testament was about 400 years.

Think about the words you depend on- a word from a close friend, daily reports of the news, the latest post or article from a favorite author, or time spent reading God’s Word.  Now imagine those words are gone- disappeared.  This was the experience of the nation of Israel when God removed his presence from the temple in Ezekiel 10-11.  The prophets, who once spoke the words of God, were now silent.  This would continue for 400 years.

Imagine the hunger for God’s Word that existed when Jesus’ birth was announced, when John the Baptist came on the scene, and when Jesus began his ministry.  The Word was made flesh, and God was speaking to His people again.  Only this time, the Word was for all people.  Matthew makes it clear in his gospel account that Jesus was the fulfillment of this prophecy from Isaiah 42:1-3.

“Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased.  I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles… a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory; and in his name the Gentiles will hope.”  Matthew 12:15-21

Jesus came to speak words of truth, from our Father in Heaven.  It’s easy to take these words, and The Word, for granted.  Soberly ponder today where your life and hope would be without them.
